[GM]: BEGIN SESSION #24
[Anne]: Part of the benefit of a spellbook is that you dont have
to find a teacher - you can study whatever you can afford to buy,
not what your master chooses to teach you...
[Anne]: (Sorry, had to get that out)
[GM]: It is 6:30pm on the 1st Wednesday of Drakurah
[GM]: Anval's party have followed the directions given by Father
Bartus and arrived at the house/office of the Doctor of
Enchantment.
[Anne]: Anne knocks on the door...
[GM]: This is in a rather nice part of town and the 'Doctor' has
his own house.
[Anne]: "It looks like we're here..."
[Anne]: ooc - Anne's party icludes Anne, JD and Jamison? or
Thomas?
[Jamison]: Not I
Thomas is with Anne, curious to see what the book contains.
[Anne]: ooc - Ok
[Anne]: Anne waits a few seconds, then knocks again...
[GM]: A sign hangs outside the door reading, "Philban
Runesword, Doctor of Enchantment"
[GM]: There also appears a few arcane symbols that you dont
appear to recognize on the sign
[Anne]: Anne opens the door, and enters (unless there is a
"Closed" sign)
[GM]: A man answers the door, "Yes? May I help you?
[Anne]: Hello... I'm Sister Anne, from St. Meliss' Is Doctor
Philben in? (Anne proffers the note Father Bartus gave her)
[GM]: The man is rather old. He is dressed in a blue robe and has
a full beard which is red and gray
Thomas watches the streets for trouble, as Anne speaks, old
habits dying hard.
[GM]: The man takes the note from Anval and looks it over. He
carries the note with him and turns around, "Please follow
me"
[GM]: The streets are rather quiet
[Anne]: Anne steps inside, and follows the gentleman...
"Come on JD, Thomas..."
Thomas waits and follows Anne in.
[GM]: Inside you see first a hallway. There are tables with a few
vases on them which look to be priceless.
[Anne]: Anne walks extremely carfeully, to avoid damaging
anything breakable...
[GM]: The man leads you to a large room with comfortable chairs,
"Please wait here while I get the Doctor"
[Anne]: Thank you, sir..."
[GM]: The man waits for everyone to be seated
[Anne]: Anne sits, unslinging her backpack...
Thomas takes a look as he walks along, stopping in front of a
vase...he pauses for a moment, looking to the door. He shrugs and
walks away and waits with Anne for the good doctor.
[GM]: The man raises an eyebrow at Jackdaw who appears to be
looking inside one of the vases
[Anne]: "jackdaw! Come and sit down!"
Thomas chuckles at the antic of the fawn, looking around at the
opulant hall.
[GM]: Jackdaw smiles and goes to sit down beside Anval,
"Nice glasses ... but too large for wine!"
[GM]: The man: "Can I offer you anything? A glass of
wine?"
Anne 's Eyes boggle at the thought of drinking a vase full of
wine in one sitting....
[Anne]: "That would be very nice... Thank you sir!"
[Anne]: Anne tries not to look self-concious in such extravagant
surroundings.... (being more used to a canvas tent and wooden
stool...)
[GM]: The walls are hung with tapestries and paintings. There is
a couple of shelves with a collection of crytals.
[GM]: The couches and chairs are some expensive leather that you
are not familiar with.
Anne lets her eyes wander over the crystals.
[GM]: The man: "Of course ... and I will bring Doctor
Philban"
[GM]: The man bows and leaves, carrying the note
[GM]: Shiney Crystals in almost every color. They catch the light
from the hanging lamps and do wonderful things with it.
[Anne]: "oooh! Pretty!"
[GM]: You see a few rainbows and arcs of solid blue and red light
Thomas walks around, growing bored, and looks at the crystals.
[GM]: In two mintues the man return with a tray containing three
glasses, and three bottles.
[GM]: The man sits them on a table in the middle of the room and
says, "The Doctor will be with you shortly"
[GM]: The man bows and leaves again
[Anne]: ooc (Three bottles? I hoep he doesn't think we're that
thirsty!)
[Anne]: Anne gets up and pours liquid from the first bottle into
the three cups, offering one to JD and Thomas.
Thomas takes a glass and takes a sip.
[GM]: The cups are filled with champaign. It sparkles and fizzes
[Anne]: ooc (wow!)
[Anne]: Anne sips hers, trying to keep it from going to her
head...
[GM]: Within the next 3 minutes another man appears. He is
dressed in fine clothing. An elegant red and orange robe with
symbols embroderied upon it.
[GM]: The Doctor: Greetings, I am Doctor Philban Runesword.
[Anne]: "Hello... I am Sister Anne from St. Meliss' and this
is Jackdaw and Thomas, friends of mine...."
Doc enters the room with the note from Father Bartus in hand.
[Doc]: It is always a pleasure to meet a Sister of Ral (he bows
formally)
[Anne]: "We have come to possess some strange items of
magic, and Father Bartus told us you might be able to tell us
what they can do, and if they had religious significance...
[Anne]: Anne bows back... "Thank you doctor!"
[Doc]: Yes, Father Bartus .. a dear friend.
[Doc]: ....an old friend, actually
[Doc]: Yes, I would be glad to help in any way that I can
[Anne]: Ahh! Thank you Doctor!"
[Anne]: (Anne brings out the Sword, necklace, and two rings)
Doc nods to Jackdaw who appears to be enjoying the champaign,
"A faun? ... It has been long since I saw one of your kind
here in Shevandale."
[Anne]: "Jackdaw... why dont you get your ring(s) out too,
and Thomas - your book..."
Doc listens as Jackdaw says, "Bubbles that make my nose
tickle and makes me want to Frolic. More. More."
Thomas pours himself another glass of wine. He sets down his
glass and lets his pack slide off one shoulder. He opens it and
withdrawls the book.
Doc laughs
[Doc]: Please follow me into my lab
Anne chuckles...
[Thor]: BRB
[Doc]: It is just across the hall
[Anne]: Anne gathers up her items - and her pack - and follows
the Doctor into his lab...
[Anne]: "Where did you and Father bartus meet, Doctor?"
Thomas reshoulders his pack and wanders into the labratory.
Doc doctor motions for the party to enter the lab which is well
lit.
Doc begins to answer Anval's question as the party changes rooms
[Doc]: Father Bartus and myself both grew up in the same village
north of here. It is called Meadowbrook.
[Doc]: I would not be surprised if you haven't heard of it ....
[Jackdaw]: back
[Doc]: It is rather small
[Anne]: (chuckle) I haven't heard of it, true... but I'm not all
that well travelled - at least not yet... (grin)
[Anne]: Did you study together?
[Doc]: Inside the lab there are three tables in the middle of the
room and stools all around them. There many shelves with powders
to the west of the room and a shelve with many books to the
north. A window looks outside on the south.
[Doc]: No, actually Sister .... Anval was it? .... we didn't
become good friends until we met here in Shevandale after our
studies.
[Thor]: (back)
[Anne]: "Yes... Anne for short, though..."
Jackdaw takes up his sirinx and plays
[Doc]: I was Master Philban and he was Brother Bartus ... and
that was many years ago.
Doc smiles as Jackdaw starts playing music
[Anne]: "hehe... it's hard to think of Father Bartus as a
Brother..."
Jackdaw wants to make all the crystals dance in the light
[Doc]: Ahhh... I once travelled to a village of fauns .... great
music ... that kind of takes me back.
(Doc whispered to Jackdaw): We have adjourned to the lab ... no
crystals.
[Anne]: "Where should we put these things, Doctor?
(To Doc) DICE for Jackdaw: (3d6) : 3d6=3,1,6 = [ 10 ]
[Doc]: Come now, faun .. join us in the lab.
Doc looks at Anval, "Please place them on the table"
Thomas places his book on the table carefully.
Anne puts the objects on the table, and rests her pack on the
floor, with her foot inside one shoulder loop
Doc goes over to a cabinet and takes out three rings. He places
these on his fingers making gesture and mumbling a few words in
an unknown tounge.
(Doc whispered to Jackdaw): Are you still playing with the
crystals?
Doc turns around and looks at the items on the table.
[Doc]: Interesting necklace .... and the rings look old .... but
one thing at a time.
Doc takes the necklace first. It is made of Malachite beads and
has a large oval Malachite stone on it. On the stone is carved a
seven-pointed star.
Doc lays it out carefully on the table and begins to mumble a few
words as he chants.
Jackdaw listens intently
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): yes, playing to them until he starts
to chant, then he listens
Doc says words in a tounge that you cant quite make out ... the
words seem to be uncomprehendable.
Jackdaw wanders over to the table
Jackdaw listens to the "feel" of the words and to their
overtones and trys to feel what music they might make
[Jackdaw]: or what music might make them
[Jackdaw]: or even enhance them
Doc says words that dont seem to register in your mind Jackdaw.
You find it very strange.
Anne waits for Doctor Philben to finish his work...
[Doc]: The necklace is very old.
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): like a notness that is there?
[Anne]: "yes?"
[Doc]: I would say at least 1,000 years ... but that is not my
expertise.
[Anne]: "All of these items were discovered in the same
place, if that helps Doctor..."
[Doc]: I can also guess that the stones alone are worth $300-$500
[Doc]: I would be curious to know where ....
(Anne whispered to Doc): Did Father Bartus ask me to keep silent
on the catacombs, or just the Sanctum Ral?
DICE for Jackdaw: (3d6) : 3d6=6,3,6 = [ 15 ]
[Jackdaw]: near the skulls what were talking
[Doc]: It is enchanted with the spell Vigor
[Jackdaw]: but not with them
(Doc whispered to Anne): IQ roll
(To Doc) DICE for Anne: (3d6) : 3d6=4,4,6 = [ 14 ]
(Anne whispered to Doc): made it by 0
(Doc whispered to Anne): You know for sure that he advised you
not to talk about the Santum Ral .. but you can recall him saying
NOT to talk about the Cats. He just said that he was going to
turn it over to the Church Investigators.
[Doc]: The spell that remains is not very strong, though. I
suspect that once it might have held a stronger enchantment, but
know it only holds one level of that spell.
(Jamison whispered to Doc): OOC: can it be recharged?
[Doc]: What makes me also think this is the seven-pointed star
carved on the stone.
[Anne]: Ahh... Alright. Why is the star important?
[Doc]: I believe that it once was also a seven pointed powerstone
[Doc]: You understand?
(Jamison whispered to Doc): ohhhhhh
[Anne]: Does that mean it was self-powered, or does it mean the
item must be powered by the user?
[Jackdaw]: "could it be fixeded?"
[Doc]: But the capacity has fallen with time ... it only appears
to hold five points of mana
[Jackdaw]: "maked to work again?"
Doc looks at Jackdaw ... Powerstones are a funny thing.
[Doc]: You cant ... recharage them or change their properties ...
at least not very easily.
[Jackdaw]: "Yea, and they need to sleep alot"
[Doc]: But you still have a five point powerstone here ... and
the necklace is enchanted with Vigor.
[Doc]: ((Will raise the HT of the wearer by 1))
[Anne]: Hmmm... Thank you Doctor...!
[Doc]: Would you like a value?
[Jackdaw]: "mine is sleeping now, it's tireded"
[Anne]: Yes, please...
[Doc]: A simliar item on the market today would have a value of
around $40,000 crowns
[Doc]: This has some wear ... but then it might have some value
as an antiquity also.
[Doc]: Unfortunately, that is not my area of expertise.
Doc smiles
[Anne]: <ulp!> That is an awful lot of money!
[Anne]: Perhaps we should move to the three rings?
[Doc]: Yes, magic is a costly business!
[Jackdaw]: "how make it work?"
[Doc]: ((Three rings? The two that you and Jackdaw found and the
one that was taken off of the Ghost?))
[Jackdaw]: ooc did thomas put that ring in the pile?
Thomas eyes light up, practilly fainting. He props himself up on
a table as regains his composure.
Doc smiles at Jackdaw, "He who wears it will feel an
enhanced Heath and Vigor ... a mage can draw upon the power of
the stone for casting spells.
[Jackdaw]: oof guess so
[Anne]: ooc - Anne had one from the same room where we found the
neckalce and sword, and JD had two - but I don't recall where he
got them...
[Jackdaw]: ooc same room
[Jackdaw]: with the sword, necklace
[Doc]: OOC: Actually my records show that you guys found two
rings total.
[Anne]: ok - maybe we got mixed up...
[Doc]: OOC: Not counting the one that Thomas holds.
[Doc]: OOC: Thomas did you put that one on the table?
[Doc]: Now, shall I have a look at the rings?
[Thomas]: [No, I did not...but only cause I forgot ^_^]
[Anne]: Please, Doctor.
Doc sits the necklace down neatly and takes one of the rings.
[Doc]: After some incantations he tells you ....
Jackdaw perks up "Yes, my sparklie!"
[Doc]: These rings are also very old
[Jackdaw]: "ooohhh!"
[Doc]: They were commonly made back in the times of the Great Orc
Wars
[Doc]: Unfortunately .. they don't hold great magic.
[Jackdaw]: "but they beed magic"
[Jackdaw]: "some anyway, and they beed pretty!"
[Doc]: They add value to a person's armor ....
[Anne]: In what way doctor?
[Jackdaw]: "My not haveded any"
[Doc]: ((first one add's +1 PD .. second one add's +1 DR))
[Doc]: As I said ... very popular in the time of war.
[Anne]: Ahhh... They would prove useful!
[Anne]: I know many warriors would be very eager to own one!
Thomas looks up, as if the dollar amount of the necklace rattle
some part of his brain into remembering something. "Doctor,
we also found this as well. I warn you not to touch it, as it
induces dark visions." Thomas shows the Doctor the ring, it
sits in the palm of his leather gloved hand.
[Doc]: Unfortunately ... they were amoung some of the first items
produced in large quantities in Methor and many still remain.
[Doc]: Ahhh... Okay ... please sit it down on the table as well
.... I will be very cautious.
[Anne]: "Dark Visions, Thomas? Why has no one told me
this?"
Thomas places it on the table.
[Jackdaw]: "nasty visions!"
[Anne]: Jackdaw?! Why didn't you tell me too!?"
[Jackdaw]: "my wanted to help but couldnt"
Thomas turns to Anne "I thought I had..."
[Doc]: The two rings have a value of $50, and $100 .... but I
suspect ... and I would be willing to go out on a limb here ...
since I have seen them before... that the value would be doubled.
[Jackdaw]: "I forgot"
[Anne]: Thank you doctor! ...
[Doc]: So, in effect $100, and $200 .... because of antique
value.
[Doc]: The carvings on the band are very interesting.
[Jackdaw]: "yes they pretty, but my not understanded them
too good"
[Doc]: And know .. the ring of visions.
[Doc]: know=now
Doc takes a white leather glove from his pocket and
ritualistically places it on his right hand.
(Anne whispered to Doc): Anne periodically checks her pack to
ensure the Sanctum Ral is safe
(Doc whispered to Anne): It is safe
Doc chants some incantations and after what seems to be a long
time (15 mintues) he rubs his head.
Doc walks over to the bookshelf and takes out a book and begins
to turn pages.
[Anne]: "are you alright Doctor?"
[Doc]: Yes, this is very odd
Doc scans the book and returns and makes one more pass with his
hand over the ring chanting some arcane words.
[Doc]: Well, I am going to have to say that I have reached the
limit of my abilities with this one.
[Doc]: It is no enchantment that I have ever seen ... and that is
saying a lot.
[Doc]: I also ran a mana test on it and I got varying readings.
[Anne]: I see... Then perhaps... hmmm....
[Anne]: Thomas, Jackdaw, would either of you object if this ring
was given into the safe keeping of Father Bartus?
[Doc]: What that means is that there appears to be a powersource
for the ring ... that is not here in this room.
[Doc]: The source of power comes from somewhere else.
[Doc]: By the laws of Physics (mana, etc.) it is impossible.
[Doc]: Of course .. I cant be sure what the use of it is.
[Anne]: Perhaps I should see the vision? It might shed some light
on the matter... " (Anne reaches for the ring)
[Jackdaw]: waited!
[Doc]: As Anne touches the ring .....
Thomas looks at the Doctor "Alright, I had a gut feeling it
was something odd." Turns to the Anne "I would not
mind...as long they know who it belongs too. I would not do that
Sister..."
Jackdaw starts to play, pulling in his magic
(Doc whispered to Anne): You are taken to a dark place. There are
hundreds of men in red robes, hooded, and chanting.
[Jackdaw]: casted Bravery on Anval to help her with the vision
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): skill 14
(To Doc) DICE for Jackdaw: (3d6) : 3d6=1,4,1 = [ 6 ]
(Doc whispered to Anne): You feel a sense of evil that makes you
tremble ... it touches you down deep in your very soul.
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): forgot to say +4 for 8 mana
(Doc whispered to Anne): But from somewhere comes a bravery that
comforts you.
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): gotta remember to say up front
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): sorry
(Anne whispered to Doc): Anne sighs with partial releif... she
continues to try and see this evil!"
[Jackdaw]: "OK anne, maybe that helpeded"
(Doc whispered to Anne): As you watch the men, you notice a small
boy tied down on a marble slab. The stone is red ... or is red
from stains of blood.
(Doc whispered to Anne): A blade is draw and the child is
stabbed. Blood flows freely.... as the men cheer. (It is a human
child, btw.)
(Doc whispered to Anne): It makes you very sick to your stomach
Anne goes pale... "Blessed Ral!"
(Doc whispered to Anne): I need an HT roll at -3
(To Doc) DICE for Anne: (3d6) : 3d6=2,3,1 = [ 6 ]
[Anne]: succeeded by 1pt (HT10)
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): sorry doesn't work the way I thought,
it's an area spell not a bonus spell, she'll be fearless while it
lasts
(Doc whispered to Anne): You feel very woosy like you are going
to loose your lunch.
(Doc whispered to Anne): But you dont
[Anne]: Anne staggers, and leans heavily against a table...
(Doc whispered to Anne): This feeling shakes you out of the spell
of the ring.
[Jackdaw]: "we telled you it Nasty"
[Doc]: ((Anval is back with us))
Thomas takes the ring in her hand into his own gloved hand.
(Doc whispered to Anne): IQ roll please
[Anne]: She drops the ring.... "Evil..."
(To Doc) DICE for Anne: (3d6) : 3d6=4,5,2 = [ 11 ]
[Anne]: Succeed by 3
(Doc whispered to Anne): Made it by how much?
(Doc whispered to Anne): thanks
[Jackdaw]: "and not nice!"
(Doc whispered to Anne): Now, I need an Old Haddin Roll
(To Doc) DICE for Anne: (3d6) : 3d6=3,6,6 = [ 15 ]
(Anne whispered to Doc): failed by 3
Thomas tries to catch it before it drops to the ground.
"Nasty ain't it?"
(Doc whispered to Anne): You recognized one name .... Dal Drakur
... it was chanted over and over at the very end.
(Doc whispered to Anne): The other words you didn't grasp.
[Anne]: "Yes... Nasty is... an understatement!"
[Doc]: Well, I think I will pass myself
[Anne]: " I think that must be given unto Father Bartus
later tonight, Thomas... But I will tell him it belongs to
you..."
[Doc]: While it is a great mystery .... the look on your face
Sister Anne quenches my thirst for knowledge at this point.
[Doc]: I am sorry that I could not be more help on the ring with
the blood red stone.
[Anne]: You must be very Tired Doctor, but could you test the
sword , and thomas's book as well? I think I will sit a moment...
[Doc]: Perhaps I shall have a look at the two books?
Thomas nods "I am not that greedy of a man...That necklace
alone can punch my way to East Street."
[Doc]: Yes ... please rest. Manfred!
[Doc]: The man appears
[Doc]: Refreshment for the Sister
[Doc]: The man nods and goes to the sitting room and returns with
the tray.
[Doc]: The man takes one of the other bottles and pours a drink
into a glass. It appears to be clear water.
[Anne]: "Thank you Doctor, Manfred... " Anne sits, and
sips the water...
[Doc]: The man:"Drink Sister ... it will give you
strength"
[Anne]: Thank you!"
(Doc whispered to Anne): The water seems to warm your bones.
[Anne]: (Anne drinks)
Jackdaw plays for Anne
(Doc whispered to Anne): It tastes like mineral water ... if she
knows how that tastes.
[Doc]: ((Both books are on the table?))
(Anne whispered to Doc): Probably... Thanks for the descrpition!
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): Emotion Controll - peace and the
quite strength one finds in a good religous service
[Thomas]: [Mine is]
(To Doc) DICE for Jackdaw: (3d6) : 3d6=6,3,2 = [ 11 ]
[Anne]: ooc - NOT the sanctum ral...
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): skill 14, area her hex only
[Doc]: Anval feels a quiet and peace that comes from a good
religous service.
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): this will take a bit
(Doc whispered to Anne): From JD's spell
(Anne whispered to Doc): ok...
Doc takes Thomas' book (black .. nothing on the cover)
[Thor]:
[Anne]: Anne pulls out the book labelled 412p
Doc begins to look over the book and gets a real worried look on
his face.
Doc drops the book, "Blessed Ral .. have mercy!"
[Doc]: Did the Father see this book?
Doc goes and gets himself a drink.
[Anne]: Doctor! Are you alright!?"
Doc pours a glass of the water that Anval drank.
[Anne]: No... he saw this one, (412p) - but not that one!
[Doc]: It is a foul book indeed.
[Doc]: Forbidden Knowledge.
Thomas jumps back a bit [Did he flinch at my book?]
[Doc]: ((Yes))
Doc takes a drink
[Jamison]: OOC: which book is this?
[Doc]: The Father would insist that it be burned at once.
[Anne]: I will ensure he sees it tonight... Thomas... I MUST
claim these two objects, for the church...
[Doc]: ((A black covered leather bound book that Thomas found in
the Baron's castle.))
[Anne]: Wait...
[Doc]: Forgive me Sister ... I do not mean any sacrilidge ... but
it is foul Necromancy
[Doc]: There must be every spell from that College in the book
[Doc]: And perhaps a few that I have never heard of ...
Thomas is looking a little concerned..."Well you got my
ring...now my book...Ah, take the accursed thing. I don't want to
be picked up with that thing on me..."
[Anne]: Doctor, could I have you write a letter detailing its
contents for me? We must rush to the Royal City very soon... It
might be needed there...
[Doc]: If there were not a priestess here with us now .. I would
have to insist that one be called.
[Doc]: Yes, I will write a description.
[Anne]: I will tell Father Bartus this night about it, and follow
his bidding.
[Anne]: Thomas, I feel badly about both of these items... how can
I repay you?
[Doc]: And now ... I shall look at the other book
[Doc]: Sister, did you want this one (412p) identified as well?
[Anne]: I think so, Doctor...
[Anne]: and the sword... I'm sorry to ask so much!
[Doc]: Oh (he smiles) I have been saving the best for last!
[Doc]: Swords are my passion!
Doc takes the book labeled 412p and scans it.
[Doc]: Interesting
[Doc]: A rather odd tounge ... but sound.
Doc flips pages.
Thomas shrugs "It will come around. At this moment, it looks
as if I won't be needing any cash...I am sure the church will
give me a roof till at least after we go to the Royal
City..."
[Doc]: It is also very old ... as you might suspect from the date
on the cover
[Doc]: But even older than that.... the year 412p
Doc examines the cover.
[Anne]: True... It is rather 'dated'..."
[Doc]: Ahh... yes
Doc goes over and takes a large flat crystal out of a cabinet.
Doc uses it to examine the front cover.
[Doc]: There was a dash here....
Doc chuckles
[Anne]: "-412p"
[Anne]: ?
[Doc]: It is not from the year 412p ... but from the Winter of
the year 12!
[Doc]: 4-12p
[Anne]: "Truly! This is a wonderful find!"
[Doc]: It is quiet odd to express the date as such in writing
...but the language is quite odd in itself.
Doc opens the book on the first page and points.
[Doc]: Do you know what that is?
Jackdaw looks
[Doc]: It is the ancient symbol for the college of Air.
(Anne whispered to Doc): Anne looks... Does she?
[Jackdaw]: "writing?"
(Doc whispered to Anne): No
[Anne]: Ahh... then is it a spellbook of sorts?
[Doc]: In it is contained all of the contemporary spells from
that college and a few older ones.
[ Paul joined the game ]
[Doc]: Yes
[Doc]: I find it very interesting, myself.
[Anne]: How much would something like that be worth, Doctor?
[ Paul left the game ]
[Doc]: There appears to have once been an enchantment on it that
would not allow it to be read ... but that spell has faded.
[Doc]: Fortunately, the spell that protects it from the elements
barely remains.
[Doc]: Spellbooks are very hard to price.
Doc considers
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): ooc tell me about it!
[Thomas]: "Doctor...At first glance does there appear to be
any spells from the College of Movement?"
Doc flips through the pages once again and after 5 mintues
proclaims, "There are about 30 spells here"
[Doc]: No, Thomas ... they are all from the college of Air.
Thomas sighs..."Okay."
[Doc]: I would value it at about $5000
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): ooc if you'd like some advice?
(Doc whispered to Jackdaw): Yes, please
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): base the price on a Master Teacher
for learning each spell
[Anne]: "Well, Doctor, when you are finished with the sword,
perhaps you would be interested in buying it, if Thomas doesn't
wish to claim it...?"
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): 200 hours x # of spells x Master
Teacher slaery?
[Doc]: The language as I said earlier is quiet odd ... it is in
Beni, I believe.
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): that assumes that even someone who
knows it might benefit from studying it
[Thomas]: [Anne: That last was for the Air Spellbook, correct?]
[Anne]: ooc Yes Thomas
[Doc]: Perhaps being an antique would raise the price a bit, as
well.
[Doc]: Will you be selling it?
Thomas shakes his head "I have no use for it..."
[Anne]: Then yes, Doctor, we will be..."
[Doc]: ((Sorry this is taking so long Jamison and Thor))
[Doc]: If I may ... I would like to purchase it from you ... I
will give you a fair price.
(Jamison whispered to Doc): no problem
[Anne]: Alright, Doctor... I trust you!"
[Thor]: ((That's ok. We went out and got our holiday tree today,
so I've been helping with that))
[Doc]: In fact, let me make you an offer. I want it for my
collection.
[Doc]: The languages of the Benoi have always facinated me
[Doc]: I believe that this could also be Sagio Benio
[Doc]: You know ... the keepers of the flame.
[Doc]: ((Sorry ... scratch that!))
[Doc]: You know ... the Sons of Wisdom?
Doc looks at Anval and then at Thomas
[Anne]: I must confess, I am not familiar with them...
Thomas shakes his head "Me neither..."
[Doc]: ((Sons of Wisdom turned up in the year of 0p with all of
the magic of the ages. The first college was founded upon their
records.))
[Anne]: ooc OK! Forgot my history lessons, then!
[Doc]: I will give you a fair price .. How does $10,000 crowns
sound?
[Anne]: It sounds very fair!
Thomas nods "Done and done."
[Doc]: And truthfully I will keep it in my collection ... it will
not be for sale.
Doc goes over and whispers something in Manfred's ear and then
returns to the table.
[Anne]: I am glad to hear that Doctor!
[Doc]: Manfred leaves the room
[Anne]: And the Sword?
[Doc]: And now .. the sword.
[Doc]: I purposely saved this for last because it it my passion!
My family has a long tradition of sword enchantments.
Doc take the sword in hand.
[Doc]: ... and the first thing I thought when I saw it was ....
it is an Orcslayer!
[Doc]: Let me see if I was correct.
Doc lays it down carefully and begins mumbling as he waves his
hands in the air and then over the sword.
[Doc]: After 2 mintues.... Yes .. it has the spell Bane ...
against the race of Orcs.
Doc continues
[Doc]: Increased Accuracy
[Doc]: After another minute
[Doc]: Increased Puissance
Doc lifts the weapon
[Doc]: It does show some wear
[Doc]: ((Accuracy +1, Puissance+1, vs Orcs only))
[Anne]: Is it damaged?"
[Doc]: It still is in good shape, though.
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): ooc are Orcs a problem? for fauns and
other sylvans?
[Doc]: Perhaps worth more for being an antique ... it appears to
have been from the great Orc War.
(Doc whispered to Jackdaw): Yes, they hate them too
[Doc]: A few knicks ... but sound
[Doc]: I would value it at between $8000 and $9000
[Doc]: An antique dealer might give you a little more ...
[Doc]: But I think I am pretty accurate on this.
Doc sits the swords down and smiles.
[Anne]: ooc - is the sword a broadsword, or shortsword?
[Doc]: ((Sorry ... it's a broadsword))
[Doc]: Well, Sister .... gentlemen ... is there anything else
that I can do for you this fair night?
[Anne]: I must thank you, Doctor... This is wonderful news, about
these items... except for a noted two..."
[Anne]: Yes, I do have a few quick questions...
Doc fills his glass, "Please feel free to ask them"
[Anne]: Will the powerstone work if separated from the necklace?
[Doc]: Manfred returns.
[Anne]: Will the necklace work if separated from the powerstone?
[Anne]: And... (Grin) How much do you charge? I have a few
friends who might have use of your services!
[Doc]: No, the spell draws its power from the stone
[Anne]: Ah... Thank you... I was curious!"
[Doc]: In fact if the stone were fully tapped ... the spell would
cease to be effective ... until the stone was once again charged
[Doc]: Actually, Sister ... I only do this as a hobby ... I am
retired for 5 years now.
[Doc]: I lecture occasionally at the University.
[Anne]: Ah... Alright then... What is the usual rate you charged,
when you were practicing?
[Doc]: I was a professor there for many years
[Anne]: It must be fulfilling to teach new faces your skills -
sort of a way to gain immortality through their works of magic -
and your own, of course?"
Doc smiles at Anval
[Doc]: Let's see ... do you really want to know?
[Doc]: The cost, I mean?
[Anne]: Yes, please...
[Doc]: I cast 5 Analyze Magic .. and 5 Identify Spell Varients
.... most of them on the bloodstone ring by the way ... that
would be at about $1100 per spell ....
[Doc]: for a total of $11,000
[Doc]: Then one of my skill usually charges a premium
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): wow, I guess I really undercharged
Vox?
(Doc whispered to Jackdaw): Perhaps I am over pricing it?
Anne 's jaw drops... <ulp> I didn't realize it was that
costly!
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): I only charged him 2 wizard days pay
($50) per item, plus $100 for confidentiality
[Doc]: ((Well, perhaps I am wrong here ... thats the cost to
enchant an item with the spells ... 10 times))
[Anne]: ooc I think the standard rate is 25$ per fatigue?
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): Is that along the lines of what you'd
let us earn for the same kind of casting?
[Anne]: ooc I'm not sure...
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): for just casting spells, not
enchanting
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): he didn't need to enchant anything
(Jackdaw whispered to Doc): a surcharge for high skill and
knowledge is always necessary too
[Doc]: ((Lets see 8 fatigue x 10 = 80 x $100 for him being a
Doctor = $8000))
[Doc]: ((Anyway the cost that he tells you makes your jaw drop,
Anval))
[Anne]: Well.. Thank you, Doctor, for your help... and I hope you
enjoy your new book!"
[Doc]: Much thanks.
[Doc]: Manfred?
[Anne]: I must hurry with these items back to St Meliss's
[Doc]: Manfred approaches the Doctor and hands him some coins.
[Doc]: The Doctor hands the coins to Anval
Thomas shakes his head "No more questions for me...Thanks
for your help, Doc."
[Doc]: $10000 for the book
[Doc]: Is gold okay?
[Anne]: Thank you... uh yes, gold is excellent!"
Jackdaw says "thank you, you have nice sparklies!"
pointing to the crystals "they rainbowey!"
[Doc]: If you would prefer notes ... or Elven Silver?
[Anne]: Anne gathers up the rings, necklace and book
[Anne]: I think the gold will be fine Doctor... Jackdaw? Thomas?
Doc hands Anval 500 gold soverigns in a nice swede pouch
Thomas takes his dark belongings and carefully places them back
in his pack.
Doc bows, "And a great please to meet you all"
[Thomas]: "Gold is good for me..."
[GM]: It has taken 2 hours at the Doc's. It is now just before
8:30pm
[Anne]: Doctor - Please, if you could, write out the statement
about the dark book of vile knowledge...
[GM]: Outside the streets are vacant. They are lighted by
lanterns along the street.
[Anne]: We need it immediately for use in the Royal City, and we
leave very soon...
[Thomas]: [BRB]
[GM]: The Doc gave Anval a written discription of the book just
before she left.
[Anne]: ooc - ok
[GM]: It was written on parchment with an official seal ... good
script ... (odd for a doc?)
[GM]: Where does the party go now?
[Anne]: Thomas, Jackdaw... I have no claim on these items of
magic...
[Anne]: Except the book and the ring...
Jackdaw puts the rings back on
(GM whispered to Anne): Btw, Anval has not checked in at the
Church that she was residing before the adventure began. She was
not staying at St. Meliss
[Anne]: I ask if I may show the book and ring to Father bartus...
In return, I'll gladly forfiet my share of any magic or wealth we
discovered...
[GM]: Is the party standing in the street, talking?
(Anne whispered to GM): Doh! OK, then she will have to check in
there...
[ Paul joined the game ]
[Anne]: I assumed we were heading back to the church...
[GM]: The party makes its way back to St. Meliss
[Anne]: St meliss'
[GM]: Within 15 minutes you arrive
(Anne whispered to GM): Is St Meliss' a more important church
than the one I was staying at?
[GM]: The Church is bright with lights. There are a few humans
entering and leaving.
(GM whispered to Anne): Yes, there is a Patrona at the
[Anne]: If Thomas gives me permission I will take the dark book
and ring to Father Bartus... but in return I'll leave him the
necklace
(GM whispered to Anne): Church where you stayed.
(GM whispered to Anne): But Father Bartus was the High Priest at
St. Meliss which is a much older church/cathedral
[GM]: ((I think Thomas is afk))
[Anne]: Ok...
[GM]: Jackdaw ... what are you doing?
Jackdaw follows Anval to the church
(GM whispered to Jamison): You two arrive back at the Pub about
this time ... there is no sign of the party.
[Jackdaw]: then goes looking for some action
(GM whispered to Thor): You two arrive back at the Pub about this
time ... there is no sign of the party.
[GM]: Jackdaw leaves the party?
(Jamison whispered to GM): /he asks the barkeep if he has seen
anything of Dirk.
Jackdaw muses "I know a street where they never . . . sleep
[Jackdaw]: yes
[Anne]: Anne asks Thomas for the book and ring, and hands him the
necklace in return... (She still carries the gold, though)
[Jackdaw]: he's LONELY
[GM]: Thomas gives them to her being very careful with the ring.
[Jackdaw]: and will be leaving tomorrow and has a lot of goodby's
to say
[Anne]: "Have a good night Jackdaw! The ladies will miss you
for sure!"
[Jackdaw]: at roughly a half hour each that will probably take
all night
[Jackdaw]: but he can sleep in the coach
[Anne]: Anne thanks Thomas and heads inside to speak with Father
Bartus about the book and ring, immediately...
[Jackdaw]: <vbg>
(GM whispered to Jamison): Barkeep hasnt seen Dirk
(GM whispered to Thor): Barkeep hasnt seen Dirk
(Anne whispered to GM): Did you want to do the chat with Father
Bartus another time - that way you could do some stuff with
Jamison and Thor tonight?
[GM]: The Cathedral contains about 20 worshippers ... there are
also 5 Clerics and 3 Priests visable.
[GM]: One of the Clerics approaches Sister Anval and greets her,
"Good Evening Sister"
[GM]: ((Thor ... are you there?))
[Anne]: "Good evening... IS father Bartus available?"
[GM]: Cleric: Yes ... I will fetch him for you.
[Thor]: ((Sort of.. kinda busy IRL right now. I'd better just
leave.. sorry))
[GM]: In five minutes Father Bartus appears.
[GM]: ((Thor no problem ... just checking))
[Thor]: ((Sorry to leave before I get to do anything.. but oh
well))
[Thor]: ((See you all next week))
[Anne]: "Father Bartus... I must speak with you on grave
news, immediately!"
[GM]: Father: "Ahhh... sister Anval. I hope that things went
well with Philben
[GM]: ((Later Thor))
[Anne]: See ya!
[ Jack left the game ]
[GM]: Thomas, did you go with Jackdaw ... or enter the Church
with Anval ... or something else?
[Anne]: "They went well indeed - and had some scary
surprises!"
[GM]: ((I guess he's still afk))
Thomas nods, giving over the accursed ring and book. "Are
you sure about the necklace?...You can keep it if you want for
now or I can take it."
[GM]: Father: "I hope the surprises were good ones!"
[Anne]: "A Powerstone is useless to me... I hope you can use
this to good effect!"
[Anne]: "Wear it in good health, Thomas!"
[ Paul left the game ]
Thomas nods and takes it. He puts it around his neck.
[Anne]: "Not all of them Father... not all of them - which
is why I must speak to you..."
[GM]: Let us adjourn to my office
[GM]: The Father takes Anval to his office and offers her wine.
[Anne]: Anne follows Father Bartus
[GM]: ((Thomas, what are you doing>?))
[GM]: Jackdaw is Frolicing in the Red light district by now
Thomas asks for a few coins from the selling of the book, and if
receives them, fades into the streets for awhile. Keeping an eye
out for Dirk if I see 'em.
[Anne]: "No thank you, Father... Water will suit me right
now - I need to keep a clear head after Doctor {hilben's potent
drinks."
[GM]: Jamison and Thor sit at the Pub drinking ... just having
returned.
[Anne]: {{anne forks over 50 gold sovereigns}}
[GM]: ((That's $1000))
[Anne]: ooc - or did you want more?
[Thomas]: [Hehehe...I was hopinf for 2 or 3...^_^]
(GM whispered to Thomas): Where do you go?
Thomas takes the money and disappears...
(GM whispered to Anne): Btw, Anval you are at full ST ... no loss
for the lack of sleep.
(Anne whispered to GM): thanks! That is a releif!
[GM]: Father: Fine
[GM]: Father pours Anval some water.
[GM]: Please .. tell me your concerns.
[Anne]: Anne drinks deeply... then begins...
[Anne]: This ring... (she shows him, wrapped in a cloth) is one
of the items found in the catacombs...
[GM]: Father: "
[GM]: "Yes?"
[Father]: And what did Phiben tell you of it?
[Anne]: when touched it shows a VILE vision of a child being
sacrificed by men in red robes, praying to Dal Drakur...
[Father]: ((Phiban, I mean))
(Thomas whispered to Father): I was just going to wonder around
for a while, prolly end up in a tavern. I will also hit the
weapon shop looking for Dirk. Also, Thomas will prolly lose some
money to some people down on their luck. [He has compulsive
generosity. I figure, considering his background, he would be
most generous to orphans and widows...]
[Father]: Ahhh.....
[Anne]: He told us it was incredibly valuable because it had its
powersource separated from it physically - that it broke the laws
of Physics... and he was afraid of it...
[Father]: Let me see the ring .... please lay it on the table,
there.
[Anne]: Anne lays it on the table...
(Father whispered to Thomas): Weapon shop was closed.
Father studies the ring.
[Father]: It has an air of evil about it.
[Father]: Phiban didn't tell you anything specific?
[Anne]: He wasn't able to delve too deeply - he said its mana
changed from spell to spell...
[Father]: Yes, perhaps it is best to leave such an item here.
[Anne]: And that its powersource was "elsewhere"
[Father]: We shall try to remove the evil aspect from it.
[Anne]: "I thought as much, father..."
[Anne]: Finally, there is this... (She brings out the book of
forbidden knowledge)
Father gets up and gets a cloth at puts the ring inside
Father looks concerned, "Forbidden knowledge?"
[Anne]: This dark book is filled with spells of Necromancy - it
was found in the Baron's Castle... And I suspect that it belonged
to him."
[Anne]: You didn't know the business My friends and I were
involved in at the castle, but perhaps now I should tell you...
[Father]: Well, officially I am supposed to destroy it at once
.... but carry one...
[Anne]: "We, as far as I know... were asked to retrieve
something personal that the baron had illegaly taken from a high
noble about to be married..."
[Father]: one=on
[Anne]: "When we arrived, and confronted the baron, he had
some sort of strange magical protection that blocked my spells
and weakened my connection to Ral and his power...
[Anne]: I thought at the time it might have been a spell, but
since the secret of this book has come to light, I suspect he
might be a necromancer..."
[Father]: Hmm.. the Baron, a necromancer!
[Anne]: "He certainly paid assassins to try to kill a friend
of mine, and a knight of the realm was locked in his dungeon...
"
[Father]: Assassins you say!
[Father]: This is dire news indeed
[Anne]: "It is not a far step to aslo suppose he might know
or practice the dark arts!"
[Father]: True .... true
[Father]: So, you are suggesting?
(Father whispered to Thomas): did you go back to your flat in
town?
(Father whispered to Thomas): Or join the others in the Pub?
[Anne]: "Father - I may have spoken out of turn... We must
be in the Royal City in 1 week to testify against the Baron...
And that is when I also hope to present the Sanctum Ral to the
High Patrona...
[Father]: Okay ... as I have said sister Anval, I have left this
in your hands ....
[Anne]: I was asking your advice... Do we destroy the book, as
our law demands, or keep it as evidence of a nobles' crime
against the gods?
(Thomas whispered to Father): Thomas will rejoin the others at
the pub.
[Father]: Thomas arrives at the Pub with Jamison and Thor at
9:30pm
Father scrathes his head and thinks.
[Father]: If you give the black book to me .. then I will see
that it is destroyed immediately
[Father]: If you wish to take it as evidence ... then I need a
written statement from you stating what you intend to use it for.
[Father]: I will support you if you think that it needs to be
presented as evidence.
[Anne]: "Then perhaps that is best... I have no wish to
carry it - we have a written staement from Doctor Philben as to
its contents... and its presence sullies the Sanctum Ral..."
[Father]: Then leave it here ... and it shall be destroyed!
[Anne]: Every second it continues to exist is another moment
someone might learn its terrible secrets!
Jamison fills Thomas in on the lack of success in locating Dirk,
and the need to find him and return the map to the weapons shop
[Father]: Yes, sister.
[Anne]: Anne leaves the book with Father Bartus
[Father]: Sister Anval, Please dont forget to sketch the map of
the cats before you depart... it could be useful.
(Father whispered to Anne): Was there anything else that you
needed from the father ... besides arranging the departure of the
fastcouch?
[Anne]: "I will, I promise... I must meet with my firends
for an hour or so, but will write it out tonight before I head to
bed!"
[Thomas]: Thomas fills the group in on what happened at the
Doctors. "I could not find him either...Starting to get a
little worried..."
(Anne whispered to Father): the money? the ones I spent 2cp for?
(Father whispered to Anne): When you go back to the other church
(Anne whispered to Father): Ok!
[Jamison]: We must find him.... he may be in trouble.... when was
the last time that you saw him, Thomas?
[Father]: One last thing, sister Anval ... something odd
[Father]: It may mean nothing ....
[Anne]: Yes Father?
[Father]: I ordered the Cats sealed ... as I told you this
morning.
[Anne]: Yes? And what occured?
[Father]: Some of my most trusted Clerics tell me that there is
evidence that something .... or someone came out of those cats
during the day.
[Father]: I know .. it sounds rather odd.
Thomas lowers his voice "During the fight with the
assassians...after that I lost track of him."
[Anne]: Hmmm.... We are missing a fellow - he lead us through
with a map he gained from a weapons shop...
[Father]: But they have now been sealed ... and will remain that
way for a while.
[Jamison]: OOC: exited through the church?
[Father]: Someone was left down in the Cats?
[Anne]: I suspect it was him returning, hoping to avoid attention
with the baron...
[Anne]: No - I suspect our contact returned to St. meliss through
the cats, but is no longer within them..."
[Father]: Ahhh.... I see .... then nothing to be concerned about.
[Father]: Okay, then.
Father stands.
[Father]: I will leave you to your travel plans.
[Anne]: And if he is within them, it is as a theif, and he is
getting no more than what he deserves."
[Father]: If I can be of any other aid .. please ask.
[Anne]: I promise, Father, I will let you know... !
Father stands and bows.
[Father]: May Ral be with you!
[Anne]: Anne bows back.. "And with you!"
Father looks at the Black Book on the table.
Father calls for two Clerics, "Joseph ... Phillom"
[Anne]: Anne takes her leave and rendezvous' with the others
(minus JD)
[Father]: The Two clerics enter the office....
[Father]: Anval arrives at the Pub at 9:45pm
[Father]: She sees Jamison, Thor, and Thomas at a table drinking
and talking.
[Anne]: Heya Guys!
[Jackdaw]: ooc were we supposed to rendezvous?
[GM]: OOC: no
[Anne]: ooc no - she just figured the rest of the crew would be
there
(Thomas whispered to GM): [Hey, gotta run. I vote for Anne if we
take a vote for best RPGer]
Jamison fills Anne in on the missing Dirk, and the anger of the
weapons shop owner over the missing map....
(GM whispered to Thomas): Thanks ... see ya next week!
[Thomas]: [See ya guys...Thank Rubix]
[GM]: I guess we should end it here?
[Jackdaw]: ooc my be there in morning, tired, but there
[Jackdaw]: sounds good
[Anne]: Ok
[GM]: Unless you want to compare notes in the pub for a bit?
[Jamison]: We must return that map.... Sc gave his word to see
that it would be returned
[ Ken-Ohki left the game ]
[Jamison]: We can end it here and just catchup
[GM]: At 10pm ..... Dirk enters the Pub
[GM]: SESSION END
